Formation Aerobatic ChampionshipsLiving in South Africa is a great place to pursue a life and love of outdoor living and aviation is one of many of those.

As a father of three teenage daughters, we spend many holidays and weekends enjoying a whole range of outdoor activities. These range from walking in the mighty Drakensburg Mountains, to boating and water-skiing on pristine inland waters, to enjoying the vast range of South African Wild Life at many different game parks around the country.

My passion for aviation was born at a young age listening to War stories told by my late Dad.  He was a Squadron Leader in Bomber Command for the RAF during WWII.  He was a humble recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Despite this burning interest in aviation, owing to force of circumstances my working career started as a school teacher after completing a BSC degree at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg.  Over the next 5 years as a working teacher, I worked hard to gain the flying experience needed to become marketable to the Airline Industry.

General Aviation in South Africa is a vibrant industry and I been fortunate enough to be involved in that at many levels over the years. This has ranged from Gliding, to involvement in Instructing and Testing on many and varied aircraft Types.

Amongst other interests, I also love to work with my hands.  The RV 7 that I am flying in the Raptor Team at the moment is an aircraft that I built over a 5 year period from a Standard “VANS” kit.  It has proved to be a really significant achievement and has resulted in opportunities that I had not dreamed of.

Combining a love for flying light aircraft, with a love for the outdoors has led to some fantastic opportunities over the years.  These have included trips to the West Coast to view the famous Namaqualand Daisies, Flying in to the magnificent Okavango Delta, as well as numerous light aircraft trips to various bush camps on the mighty Zambezi River.

Being privileged to fly currently for South Africa’s National Carrier (SAA) brings some unique opportunities in the world of aviation.  I have friends and colleagues who own a variety of classic and vintage aircraft, many of which I am privileged to fly from time to time.  The birth of the Raptor Formation Team is a testament to the human capacity that we are privileged to enjoy in and amongst this fraternity of people.

I look forward to being a part of the FAC in China
